You may find getAnalogControlState works better, but yes, this seems to be a bug.

How about using getControlState on the server? That should work with whatever input method is used.

Just played on the server a bit earlier and noticed that the away detection doesn't work properly if you use a controller (e.g. xbox 360 controller). It pops up the message asking you to press a movement key every minute or so even though I'm moving. Pressing a keyboard key fixes that, but that's hardly ideal...
