  1. None of this is actually happening.

Sorry I should have made this clearer before. I'm admin but that doesn't entail any management of the server so everything here is just hypothetical. I'm more trying to see what the issues are here and resolve them.

Things are pretty much set up how they were before, besides the switch of machines all that's changed is Minecraft itself.

Some points that have been raised:

Arena - How would you want to see it implemented? How would it be controlled? What sort of design would you want it? Post some ideas or examples :)

Enchanting - What do you think about it?

Making XP easier to obtain - how would this help? Surely the people that play longer would have 10 sets of perfect gear instead of 1?

Diamonds - are diamonds rare now? When I was playing they'd be hard to come by until you began raiding, and the ample supply of x-rayers meant they were never a problem after the first day or two. I suppose that leads in to:

X-raying - how do you feel about the current system? It's one thing that's relatively new. Any changes you would want? One plug in I was looking at involves restricting the amount of ore an x-rayer can mine to that of a regular player. It seems good on paper but not sure how it'd perform. Their intro explains everything you need to know, check it out.

TNT - There's the tnt in the shop. I think the 2 main reasons there's less tnt are that grinders aren't as effective with the new mc updates, and that the gunpowder people do receive they use on potions instead. How would you increase TNT? I mean the ways I see it are either increasing the base drops of creepers to a minimum of 2, meaning there'd be more gunpowder but I get the feeling that'd just mean more potions. Rewarding a site vote with tnt. Or you could make tnt a rare drop from a mob. It's sad that people don't canon any more. Ruining bases was one of the major sources of fun.

Voting - How do you find servers? What sites do you use? I know when I was looking I'd only use one or two sites that were well formatted and had good search options though I can't remember what they were. How would you want to see votes implemented? Personally I think going for one or two sites will make it easier, and thus mean more people would be willing to vote. One tekkit server I played on had a reminder every now and then that said 'you've not voted on x.com, vote now to receive blah blah blah'. Being able to click the link in the window meant it was never a hassle. If we had two sites to vote on, one could net you green coins and the other could give you an item. Perhaps a diamond or TNT block, or maybe it'd be fun (if even possible) to have a random block (would be cool to randomly get a sponge or mycelium block).

Advertising - How do? I know I keep mentioning it but. The top hit when I search 'minecraft servers' will sell you a banner ad at the top of the page for $15.40. I personally don't see that as very much (around €10?) provided the audience it'd reach and the amount of players we could receive over the christmas school holidays. How well does spamming other servers work? Voting isn't going to work when we don't have a big enough player base to make an impact.

Other issues - what are they :)

    For your replying convenience:

    Arena -

    Enchanting -

    XP -

    Diamonds -

    X-ray -

    TNT -

    Other Issues -

  2. If we remove all weapon and armour enchants, but leave looting then getting gunpowder will be easier. With more gunpowder there'd hopefully be more tnt (if people wanted to remove splash potions even more so) which would mean ender pearl glitches wouldn't be necessary for base entry.

Or just re-enable ender pearls and wait for the flux of topics complaining about their abuse.

What are people's thoughts on bow enchants? Leaving them in would still leave something to do with your XP that would help you with raids, and might be cool to get some more archery going on but equally they might get frustrating.

  3. The resets seem to be spaced much more than they have been in the past and serve many purposes. It reshakes the pecking order, gives fresh resources to mine, gives an opportunity for new base design and location and provides a nice fresh terrain.

Whilst at first the thought of a map reset caused annoyance, I found I almost waited for one because it meant I got to build again. I think the best way to make a good thing out of resets is to really invest time in your base design and make it creatively raid proof, not just the same water cube over and over.

It's also worth noting that one of my favourite maps in terms of enjoyment was when we had a relatively shitty mountain base. No water protection and no walls initially. We actually got raided a few times and it added more enjoyment to the game. Being raided is fun when you beat off (lol) the attackers so if you really think you've got enough skills to pay the bills, just rock a booby(lolol)-trapped mud hut and wait for the fun to come to you. Nothing is more satisfying than coming up with intricate traps and watching your agressors fall for them time after time.

  4. I thought about removing potions, but they provide a lot more gameplay and a genuine reason to head to the nether. If people aren't hiding behind such OP'ed armour combat will be easier and potions won't necessarily help as much as they do now.

I think the thing to remember is, besides the older players everyone's going to expect a server with full MC features. Removing enchanting is easy and clean - An MOTD can simply cycle saying no armour/weapon enchants. But when you start selectively removing potions it becomes a little trickier. If we were going to remove potions the only way I'd personally want to see it implemented is removing splash potions only. That way maybe people would use their gunpowder for TNT and revert back to using tnt canons instead of enderpearl glitches to gain entry to people's bases.

On that topic, you can make an extremely effective tnt canon with only 2 blocks. Rangers used the tactic almost exclusively (unless someone really pissed us off) to get entry. Just put two blocks adjacent, light the back one with a torch first and then the second a little after (length of time depending on the distance you want it to travel). Try it out in SP to get your aim and timing right so as not to waste any blocks.

I can guarantee you 95% of dungeons/spawners are found with x-ray. Especially those that miraculously decide to set up base around 4 spawners in close proximity. You can world edit out a block ID so perhaps replacing them before the map starts would help out a bit too.

  5. Said it before, might as well say it again. What about removing enchantments on armour and weapons? Or at the very least limiting it to prot/sharpness 1. With the anvil it really isn't a task to get the best possible pvp gear with a little time investment.

What I found fun about the old faction wars was the small gap in the best on the server and the worst in terms of inventory. A player can join and be on the same sort of level as 90% of the server in less than an hour and the rest is just up to tactics and luck. Now it just seems whoever plays the longest or has the biggest exp grinder wins because they have the best gear. That provided a lot of new people to raid on a daily basis and less people quitting when they get destroyed by people they have no possibility of killing.

And although its against the spirit of what faction wars used to be, perhaps in its current state it'd be advantageous to give new players 20 minutes of pvp protection to avoid the general ass-ery reported above. On a managerial side of things, would it be possible to see if Whimplash wanted to have ftp access? At the least he could restart the server in TC absence.

  6. Here's my take on things. People are wrong about where the problems lie.

The issue is not about the game. There are plenty of servers out there that have like hundreds of people on that still play faction wars Minecraft, even on school days. People still play Minecraft.

The problem is with the server and the administration. I feel like the server is not really configured to what makes the players happy. There are plugins that would really improve the server that are never looked into. also, it is the issue that the admins are pretty inactive. I have videos of hackers and now I don't even bother posting because I know they'll never get banned.

Another problem is that there should be more advertising/voting promotion for the server. All servers lose players, and more must join to keep the player popuation up. The way I found this server was that I saw it while browsing on the Minecraft Forums. Also, it's cool that you get GC for voting, but if there was more of a reward added, more people would vote, and that's what really matters. I have to say, 50 GC a day is almost nothing, and you have to go to 5 different web sites which is a bit of a hassle, especially when you have to search up the links in the forum somewhere.

Have to agree with the sentiment it's not a minecraft wide thing. It's our player base and the lack of it which is the issue here.

    What plug ins?

Every report in the topic has been dealt with, if a player isn't banned then the evidence wasn't enough. Despite my schedule (and Halo) I check every day to see if there is anything that needs doing.

I agree with the voting system. I think we should aim at one or two sites - when you look at a lot of other successful servers that's what they tend to do. Rewarding votes is up to Clavus. Perhaps giving 5 levels of xp with voting would help? Though that said to make any sort of impact we'd need a much larger player base in the first place to gain momentum. You can pay a sponsorship fee to pin your server on certain sites. Not sure how much that is but it's an option.

  7. Did you change your video settings? Apparently it can be caused by enabling openGL.

Easy option, navigate to app data and delete the minecraft folder (back up any worlds you want to save) and restart the client. It will redownload all of the config files as well.

  8. Reports for minecraft belong in the stickied topic.

One of the better things Mojang have done for admins is add in a disclaimer to vanilla minecraft:

    post-6154-0-27090900-1352464975_thumb.pn

Just don't click links :) If it were illegal material it would have been removed somewhere between it's inception about 4 years ago and now. A global admin will snipe the link if they deem it offensive I guess.

As for the hack report, that's answered in the stickied topic.

  9. The only logical reasoning I can think as to why it's not working as easy as it did last night is that (stick with me because I don't really know what I'm talking about)

Dungeons were introduced ages ago, before Mojang decided to code in 'structures' like mineshafts, villages etc. Therefore, dungeons are hard coded to a seed number. BUT, structures aren't. The minecraft world generator know's where to put the structures based on co-ords, but the layout and contents is randomised by the world generator totally independent of the seed.

So in effect if the spawner was found in a shaft, and i regenned the area, it knows that a mineshaft is supposed to be there but it randomises the layout meaning the exact same stuff doesn't get replaced.

This is all based on the fact that last night Clavus and I literally walked into Kodaeur's dungeon (an isolated dungeon, not a dungeon attached to a shaft), selected an area and typed //regen and it worked. With two other bases (TheMonkeys and Cruxis) it's not working, and they're both at mineshafts.

If anyone can find an isolated dungeon and let me know the co-ords I can do some more testing and see if I can get to the bottom of it.

@Clavus, just saw your other post about encompassing the dungeon. I've tried modest selections, large ones, even a whole chunk with no luck.
