R.I.P. Megaupload

It is indeed about copyright infringement. It is said that they made tons of money on pirated files by giving the ability to purchase premium accounts which increased download speeds and ladidadida.

They made tons of money by allowing users to download other users content faster by paying for a premium account. It's not Megauploads fault people upload pirated stuff.

Youtube does the same thing. Would it be illegal if youtube offered us faster buffering speeds on their videos (some of which are from pirated movies etc.) ?

Yeah exactly, but that is the excuse that the American government uses to shut it down.

I think it sucks that MegaUpload is down, but it's a bit of a shady situation. Though they did remove copyrighted content when asked, in a way they kind of supported the uploading of copyrighted content. Apparantly people that uploaded a lot could gain money from it, and files that didn't get downloaded a lot would be removed after a certain amount of time.

In short, it's kind of difficult to say who's fault it is. The government's reason isn't very compelling, but MegaUpload and it's owner don't seem to be 100% on the right path either.
