Parents and computers

Hi guys. This is a thread to bitch about your parents still using Internet Explorer 5.5, or praising them for trying to be more of this time and using Firefox.

In other words, post details about the computers your parents use + how they use them.

I'm first (yay):

Father

PC specs: Windows 7 Home Premium @ x64, Dual-core CPU, decent GPU (HD5xxx), uses Eyefinity for 3 screens.

Additional info: Uses PC for work.

Level of computer knowledge: Knows quite a lot. But only when it's related to fixing simple problems.

Software: After I forced him to switch to Windows 7 he went from IE7 to Google Chrome and Outlook 2003 to Mozilla Thunderbird.

Mother

PC specs: Windows 7 Ultimate @ x64, AMD Athlon64 X2 6400+ (3.2 GHz), 4 GB memory, Intel Postville 80 GB SSD (no normal HDD, lol)

Additional info: Moved her from a Celeron to my old hardware. PC is damn fast with this SSD in. She's happy with it. Mainly plays Solitaire on it (lol). Also she uses our ePad (chinese iPad clone with Android) a lot for solitaire + e-mail.

Level of computer knowledge: She knows more about PCs than she thinks she does. When something goes wrong she tries to 'fix' it herself first. However that usually breaks it even more, but atleast she tries. Plus she always stays up to date with most common tech. details.

Software: Solitaire, Google Chrome and Mozilla Thunderbird.

General opinion about my parents with their PCs: After I upgraded them. Everything is fine. They try to solve problems on their own, but they usually fail. Mom stays up-to-date with tech. news and really tries to understand the whole IT world, which makes me smile. For your information, my parents are 55/56 years old.

GO! :)

Mum:

PC Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium, AMD Turion x64 x2, 2.5GB RAM, 160GB hard drive (less than 10GB left on it, hah), and some onboard graphics.

Additional info: Her laptop is about 3/4 years old now, wants to get a new one, lacks money.

Level of computer knowledge: Pretty low, knows how to navigate Office 2007 at least, unlike some people in my diploma >.>

Software: Solitaire, Minesweeper, Firefox (was instructed to always use Firefox for internet, never IE)

Dad:

PC Specs: Not entirely sure since its a work laptop, and ive never poked around in it, I do think its a Core 2 Duo though, and he's always shouting at how slow it is.

Additional Info: Work Laptop, also has an iPad

Level of computer knowledge: Quite high, he was the family IT support guy for many years until I overtook him :V (He also knows a bit of basic which surprised the hell out of me)

Software: Office '03, Firefox, probably some other stuff.

Mum generally asks for help with problems instead of attempting to do it herself so that she doesnt fuck it up further. It's generally easy to fix though. Never have any problems with Dad, like I said, he's the ex tech support in the house.

Both don't stay up to date with tech stuff, mum's laptop needs replacing desperately, its stupidly slow, may re-install vista or install 7 on it to make it non-shit. Dad is thinking of mac if he were to get his own laptop, since then no-one could install games on it and make it slow, I always counter that argument now with Steam :V

Dad : My ooold and terribly slow laptop Lenovo (forgot which one), Intel pentium 4, and Idon't know about the rest.

Computer knowledge: Nothing. He just ruined my old laptop by installing random softwares (when he sees some ad, hop, he clicks and dl the shit that is proposed).

I won't help him, I won't give him my current laptop if he is going to do the same.He has to deal with it.

The only thing he does well is going on skype...

Mum: Dunno, that's a work computer.

Knows better than my dad, for sure, but she just uses it to work & search, nothing else.

I'm the only one of the family who knows advanced things about PCs (my bro knows a bit too, but not as much as me).

My parents recently divorced, my mumz does not have a PC/laptop yet

Couple of months ago I build a PC for my dad, but I can't fully remember what I put in it, though I choose the parts :yeah:. But imma give it a try

Windows 7 ultimate x86

Some AMD X4 ???? processor, could it be Athlon II? Or phenom II? Dunno anymoar

Gigabyte Hxx ???? motherboard

2gigs of OCZ platinum? DDR3 ram

Coolermaster cheapo case with a chrome front, looks nice

Coolermaster 600 watt power supply

Medion 24inch monitor 1920x1080

Graphics are on the integrated into the motherboard, but it's faster than a low range recent card :meh:

I don't like him using IE 8.0, cuz it hasn't got graphics acceleration, and he zooms pages so he can read it (bad eyes) so it's laggy like hell, but the dude doesn't wanna use FF4.0 beta.

Dad:

PC specs: his old desktop at home is a P4 3.2ghz with a Gefore 6800GT, but he barely uses it any more.

Additional: He has a HTC Desire which he uses for a lot of things. I also got my HTC from him :V

At work he has a dual monitor setup. Core i7 920, 12GB RAM, Intel SSD, Some Nvidia Quadro card. He uses SolidWorks and models eat quite a lot of memory.

Knowledge: He taught me how to pirate software 15 years ago. Likes gadgets and knows how to find obscure patches for them in the deepest corners of the internet.

Mum:

PC Specs: She doesn't actually use the desktop I build for them back there (AMD tri-core, 4GB RAM, HD4850) because my brothers play on it a lot all the time. Instead she uses the Medion laptop my stepdad once bought (Windows Vista media model or something) for the occasional mail checking.

Knowledge: Knows how to work around issues and how to use software (she once worked as a secretary).

Neither of my parents play video games. My mom was once addicted to Tetris but that's about it.

Both my parents are remarried. My stepmum and stepdad are pretty terrible when it comes to computers, although my stepdad used to play Quake / Doom and other games from that era. He had a Commodore 64!

Dad: Basically as good with a computer as me, he uses google chrome and doesn't afraid of anything.

He's better with hardware stuff then me tho.

Also he has a TRIPLE MONITOR Setup. 2 1680x1050's and 1 1920x1080.

Mum: Only uses internet explorer and uses PC for e-mails.

Father

PC specs: He sometimes uses an ASUS Eee PC, some other Core 2 Duo laptop, a Medion PC with an i5 and his PC at work.

Level of computer knowledge: Knows quite a lot. No doubt he knows more about setting up networks. I know more about things you'd expect me to know more about, like piracy, something he teached me. He sometimes asks me what software I use for what task.

Software: Office 2003 and IE.

Additional info: He told me he used to write programs in Basic and sell them to a local store.

Mother

PC Specs: Asus Eee PC

Software: Outlook, Office 2003 and IE.

Level of computer knowledge: She is starting to get decent with Powerpoint. I often have to help with things like copy-pasting, or when she wants page numbers in word.

Parents have one laptop, which is 6 or 7 years old,. and my dad keeps bitching about how slow it is.

I'm not touching it because if I do, it's speed suddenly is my fault.

Software they use is only firefox and Office.

Knowledge of my mom is like nothing,. she blames the laptop when internet is slow.

Knowledge of my dad is better, but he still wont admit re-installing windows would make his laptop faster.

My mom, well, she passed away when i was 13 so i won't go into detail and don't feel comfortable talking about it...

My Dad: he uses some of my old rig stuff which is pretty fast imo.

he still uses IE but sometime firefox.

he has little more than basic knowledge but when he needs something like a youtube to mp3 converter, he downloads the first one he sees... which come with viruses making the pc slow as hell.

But if the PC wont start any more due a missing bootmgr, he can fix it by his own.

my dad is 60 years old.

Im on a horse

My Parents is... something... might be usual...

Mom:

Uses my pc with Windows Vista (Nothing much to say)

Additional:

Has a netbook but uses my pc. (Her netbook is shit, she got that after a month of use)

Knowledge:

knows how to use programmes pretty much (simple ones), but not as much as me.

Dad:

In his house he uses his MAC.

Additional:

Dont now that about him.

Knowledge:

Large. Somehow knows even much more than me.

Stepdad:

Lives with us. Rarely uses my pc.

Additional:

Has some crap on his work... No idea what he uses.

Knowledge:

NOTHING.

For expection he can use Microsoft Word and Internet explorer only a bit.

Also: A part of his pc knowledge is how to turn off the pc:

Watch this on 0:40

Yep. Thats his knowledge. Atleast my pc doesnt turn in pieces from his "shutting down" pc process.

We all share the same computer here.

Guys, if you would stop always being so 'serious business', you can meet Twink, my star-friend from Shooting Star Summit. Every night, after a full day of not talking at all, I finally get the chance to see friends...

The moon, Luna, is also here, with me, very often... She doesn't have a lot of time, but she is so cool... but you see... not many people believe in her, that's why she has so few contacts...

Sometimes.. they appear vague.. but sometimes they are very bright. They turn brighter the more you believe in them. Some days, like this one.. I hate the humans-society. They turn very bright, I'm sure...

And I asked Twink the impossible... I wished a world, where all humans like most of you, would stop caring about living the normal life... everything in the world needs to go by unwritten rules... I hate that! ;-(

I wished... no... I wish a world where STATUS FROM POSSESSION completely fades away... in this humans society, everyone is like 'the more expensive my stuff is, the higher my status'. I hate going shopping. Especially shopping clothes. You go in that shop and all people around you buy new shoes every week, and they worry about things like.. I don't understand really.. it's too difficult to understand for me. They worry when their scarf doesn't exactly match their pants colour. That is why I never go shopping, because it makes me feel so stupid for being a human...

Look at you. You don't even read. What am I doing wrong, why are you able to do this? You idiots... fine. I know you aren't listening. You are too cool for that.

The world has been destroyed enough.. the only thing that needs to be destroyed is pride of expensive things. The only thing that needs to be destroyed is condescension.

I told my wish to Twink, but I know that not a single Star Spirit is able to grand such a wish. The wish can only be fulfilled if the humans work along. And that will never happen.

Humans are so dumb... sigh...

You want to know my computer specs? The computer works. There. That's the computer specs that matter.

Story complaining about people boasting about their CPU specs/expensive stuff.

tl;dr version

You wouldn't believe me anyway, you are too foolish to believe stuff.

No it was perfectly understandable as subconscious rambling about how dumb humans are. We all know that. You should stop assuming we don't and let us have our fun discussing this topic.

My parents share one computer (and my dad barely uses it, just for looking at second-hand stuff on the web he might be interested in). My dad has his own company, and my mother does the administration on the computer. The new computer they have is quite fast (the older one was slow as hell, because of many viruses which I wasn't allowed to scan :/).

I'd rather touch their computer not anymore, since it's my fault when they buy a new computer, while the screen was apparently broken after connecting the new computer. My mother could've asked me what the problem was first. :(

And she uses Google Chrome and IE. Firefox is too different for her, she says.
