I've tried to calculate the size of the MC map from our server, roughly from the last image sent by Clavus. Assuming an average size of 1900 by 1250 by 110 blocks, the current map has ~250 mil blocks or slots (including air). That means 4 bytes of information for each block, storing color( red, green and blue ) and block type equals roughly 1 GB of RAM space! I'm not sure how Notch is optimizing this (maybe saving to HDD or I don't know), but it's surely an amazing amount of information.
