I was under the impression (merely from French lessons) that jambon is ham, not gammon

I think its sort of both, having actually been to france and asked for jambon and chips and getting gammon and chips, but also ham being sold in the supermarkets there as Jambon as well. It seems to be more meaning that cut of pork rather than individual products.

Also about french food, when I was in france at holidays it was always a surprise what I was about to put in my mouth,. due to the french people having an impossible language and they have almost everything un-recognizeable in their shops..
