How about just leave the server 1 week with crits off and then another week with crits on and see the difference between how many players are online in the "crits-off" week and "crits-on" week since you want to check if players will leave because of crits being off. Because it's a longterm effect (losing players), 1 week isn't enough and that's why we can't and won't have trials.

I really think it's some sort of bug in TF2. These hickups don't happen on Ferir (which handles a lot more gameservers & players) on CSS, GMod etc. But then again, we regularly test new configurations to see if they solve the problems.

You're wrong about IRC. It's obvious admins can't be 24/7 ingame. Although they can be on IRC even if there're doing something else. In that case they can assist you if you report a cheater in IRC and ban them.
