Even the Source SDK wiki links to that website for map optimization. It's the best tutorial for optimizing maps on the net

I always set it from 10 to 11. Don't know why the default setting is 3. Guess those guys at Valve are pretty slow.

You're probably messing something up with the brushes, check your compile log for errors (post it here (in quote tags) if you can).

Guess you should all have seen a few My favourites are 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. The last one is pretty depressing though, it's one big drama with absolutely no good left at the end. They're both great nonetheless. Dawn of the Dead was pretty fun too, although a bit more Hollywood style than then 28 (...) Later films. As for other horror style movies: I watched the Ring once, and I decided never to watch Japanese style horror again. I still have nightmares.
