Sure. Except for the fact that there's no trap door in Minecraft at all, and the fact that you can just place blocks under yourself and get out of there, this plans seems totally do-able. trapdoor = sand+red dust torches and tnt in the middle. Make the bottom unbuild-able or restricted like spawn.

Built a trap clavus, make a giant obsidian cage and when the thief wants to look into the chest, bam, trapdoor opens and he is stuck till someone finds him.

I find it really sad that you can't pre-order yet on steam but you can in other stores, serious valve that's sad.
