Clavus got a reaction from Cena in I'm not dead! Just retiring...
I've been letting this linger for a while now, but seeing as Ywa is gearing up a new Mr. Green refresh soon, it's time to review my role. Ever since I stopped managing the Minecraft server I haven't been active here. Truth is I moved onto other games. Plus I'm working on finishing up my education and finally graduate from university. After that I hope to start a professional game development career, specializing in the new wave of virtual reality gaming

So from today forward, I'm no longer part of the TopCrew.

It's been many fun years. I joined back in 2006 / 2007 after regularly playing on the GMod Zombie Survival. After I started modding it, things just kept on going. The donation system, !ravebreak, Infected Wars, Team Fortress 2 Arena / Payload, Minecraft... lots and lots of hours spend on those. I still remember the topic that introduced Minecraft to the community. Our very first survival multiplayer server, and the many worlds that came after.

I want to thank everyone that made these years enjoyable and worthwhile. The regulars, the forum goers, and the people that bravely stood on the frontlines as game admins. Couldn't have done it without you. Thanks Ywa for giving this opportunity and managing the server back-end. I'll probably drop by from time to time to hear the mandatory "everything was so much better when you were around" comments

You can always add me on Steam if you haven't already. I'm always interested in chatting about gaming or game dev topics. Still playing games on a daily basis (Battlefield 4 and Arma III nowadays).

Clavus got a reaction from Mr. Darkness in Ok, Factions is no longer fun, we need something new
I like the idea of resource control. For example, there are three factions / towns at the start of the map. Every one is lead by a single player, who can appoint officers.

Every faction has a resource chest. This chest cannot be moved or destroyed. You have to put resources into it to keep your faction alive, such as food and money. By paying enough of a specific resource, you can claim more land and increase the size of your faction. If you don't provide enough food for your faction (it saps over time), you might lose land. There could be specific fetch quests for resources that give your faction bonuses such as damage resistance.

But yeah, these ideas require quite a lot of development time. Isn't there a plugin (or combination of plugins) that does this already?

Clavus got a reaction from Toxik in Admin Abuse (in general)
Let me make this clear. The job of an admin is to be as unobtrusive as possible. Flying around without good reason gets people on edge. Spawning stuff for others messes with the game too. As an admin you're only supposed to interfere when rules are being broken. World edit is not to be used outside of removing lava mountains or world cleanup. When monitoring, stick to the vanish and spectate powers you're granted.

These rules aren't solid, but break them unless you have good reason to. This is how I envision the role of admins of our server.

If anyone thinks someone isn't a good admin, build a case with solid proof before you come complaining.

Oh and one more thing Mathijs:

That sort of reasoning is retarded. You are granted administrative powers because I trust to do your job well. If you misuse this trust, it is 'abuse' in every sense of the word.

Clavus got a reaction from Toxik in Hi Admins. Just a question.
Most major modifications just ended with people complaining. I'm waiting for Mojang to stop adding redundant shit like horses to their game and give us a decent mod API. They promised to give us one over a fucking year ago.

Xray plugin is staying. Xrayers undermine (pun not intended) the whole server economy.

I really don't have the time to provide server upkeep at the moment. I'd love to delegate this to other people, but nobody seems mature enough, or has a solid plan on how to keep everyone entertained and happy. If you think you're up for it, PM me. Explain why you'd make a good server manager and what you'd do with the server.

This was one of the best moments of the conference, when the next-gen console war was decided:

Also the PS4 will be region free, unlike the Xbone. They went straight for Microsoft's head and wacked it clean off.

I play HL2 with mouse and keyboard. I can make the same reactionary movements as I normally would without it feeling bad, I'm just as accurate as I am normally (even though a metrocop's head at 50m distance is like one pixel due to the low pixel density at the moment). The Rift complements pretty much every control scheme, and Valve's implementation of FPS aiming works great.

The virtual boy was the same idea, but failed because the technology just wasn't there yet. I could play hours with the Rift without feeling eye strain or getting a headache. The reason I don't is because playing HL2 in VR can be mentally exhausting because of how intense the whole experience is, you really need the break to catch your breath and mentally process all the cool shit you just did. It really is that awesome.

Been playing Valve's official VR mode for Half-Life 2 yesterday. It's in the beta branch right now for which you can opt-in.
You haven't played Half-Life 2 until you've played it with a Rift. The whole game seemed to have been made with VR in mind, it's crazy. The enemies (a lot of them attack up close, which is enjoyably terrifying in VR), the environment (much to explore and little things to pick up) and the story overall (silent protagonist and your camera is never taken from you). It's seriously the best VR game available right now.
